Lessons for Communities in the Global South on The Role of Data Tools from MRVs in Sustainability Efforts

By Meshack Nzioka

The role of digital Monitoring, Validating, and Recording tools is providing transparency and data related to impact assessments of climate efforts in so far as carbon sinks and carbon sequestration efforts and claims. This innovation proves the essence of proof, or measurement in consolidating efforts and measuring impact. The underlying question of measurement, of data and assessment is to provide and even approve value. Indeed, in a process that is rife with challenges such as double counting and greenwashing, metrics help to showcase why global stakeholders should consider a given project. For many communities, tools such as MRVs are out of their access and they are in as such at the threat of facing greater inequality; if these resources are to be made available to them, they are likely to experience greater equality.

Activist or activism-oriented models which the work in civil space, have in the modern day to readily anticipate the changes in technology, as technology can be inclusive, as much as it can widen the chasm. For instance, today, the tools of carbon markets have advanced to commercialize the efforts and the introduction of tools of measurement prove that the game has shifted. Impact is not only whispered, it is evaluated and proven. Those who own the tools of measurement yield great competitive power in ascertaining their work. The opportunity presented by early adapters is the increase in their overall positioning as they can approve of their work and present a more transparent record to other parties. In essence, it is a model that shows the work done is not only altruistic but also that the best scientific variables have been proven. It is a shift from prove, do not explicate. In activism-based models, explicating has proven that it can only go as far, and that even the best intentions or works have to be accompanied by metrics.

The concept of monitoring, validation and recording can be used in other processes adopting to qualitative and quantitative forms as may apply. For instance, the social progress of interventions that target mental health have a great opportunity to track for the efficacy human interventions. The use of social indicators is not entirely a new concept, but its precision mapping as has been applied in other areas shows that more can be done. It is about the process of observing, and offering feedback to the processes. That way, it is easy to account for what works, and note the levels of improvement, to the extent of celebrating incremental growth. For one thing that is certain is that the sustainability work does not always offer sudden giant leaps, it is gradual and every step needs to be measured, observed, and every part of the growth journey watered.
